2 Types of Orchid
While there are over 25,000 orchid species and in excess of 100,000 hybrid orchids, the truth is they all fall into two orchids types. Terrestrial and Epiphytes are the names. Terrestrial means they grow on the ground and Epiphytes are the ones that grow in the trees; very simple, in the air or on the ground. Dendrobiums and bulbophyllums are examples of epiphytes, and cymbidium and calopogon are examples of terrestrial. Just as a note of interest, both of the orchid types grow in similar ways. Shoots can appear flanking the earlier growth which will result in the orchid spreading or recent growth will be seen at the apex of the plant signaling upward development. Both types of orchids are very popular with the flower enthusiast and are grown with excitement by professional horticulturist and home growers alike.
Terrestrial Orchids: This type of orchid is loved by growers for many reasons. There are at least 40 species and thousands of hybrids. This type was thought to be the first to be cultivated in civilization for their beautiful blooms. The accepted habitat is in the eastern part of the world, Southeast Asia to Japan and on further to Australia. The name terrestrial implies that this orchid only grows on the ground. While it does prosper in the rich floor of a rain forest with decaying nutriments the plant can and does survive in trees and the sides of rocks. This is what makes it a favorite among growers, very durable in any environment. One other point of favor is the plant's ability to year after year produce stunning blooms for the enjoyment of the household it's in. Both beginners and old pros enjoy this type and grow it with endless gratification.
Epiphytes: This plant term is not just for orchids, can be applied to any plant that has a root system not in the ground. One of the best known is the dendrobium orchid. These orchid plants can be found in the lands of northern India, Australia, Polynesia and the greater South East Asia region. Dendrobiums number in to the 1000's of species. One of the key characteristics of this plant is its need to grow in tropical conditions. Warmth and humid conditions are the best for growth, along with a lot of diffused sun light. These are the ideal surroundings for a dendrobium orchid. These orchids are relatively easy to grow but do necessitate more care to achieve maximum results in comparison to a cymbidium orchid. Dendrobiums do not bloom or flower quite as often. Phalaenopsis or phal orchid as they are sometime referred to are uncomplicated to grow for the at home horticulturist. The flowers or blooms are long lasting. This long bloom cycle lends dendrobiums to being used for weddings. The palette of color range is very helpful when using these plants. The scope of color is from pink to yellow to stripes. Also the blooms seem to hold well.
So just remember when someone comes to you and brags about all the types of orchids they have you will know the bottom line. They have species or hybrids of orchids, and they are in two types. Welcome to the next step to becoming an educated horticulturist.

how long will my phalaenopsis hybrid orchid last?
i have just recieved a 3 1/2 ft high orchid and very badly want it to live forever, with proper care. How long will it last?
With proper care the plant itself should last a good long while, can't really give a figure though.
One of the biggest problems with orchids is loving them to death. Too much/improper watering can mean problems for the orchid.
It works best to soak the roots of the orchid and then let it drain. Don't just get the orchid mix wet, set the whole pot in water for a while: 30 minutes to an hour. Let it get somewhat dry between waterings. Be careful to not get any water down in where the leaves come together. If water stays there the plant can rot. If water does get down in the leaves, carefully tilt the plant while supporting it, until the water drains out. We also have been known to plaque our orchids (even the phals) on cork and hang them so that when they are watered, the water automatically drains out of the leaves.
Ever so often check the condition of the orchid mix. If it has broken down/decayed into smaller and smaller pieces it may be time to use new mix. In nature an orchid's roots are open to the air so they need a potting medium to have plenty of air spaces for the roots. Once the mix begins to break down, the mix becomes more and more compacted until little or no air is able to get to the roots and the mix holds onto to much water. One of the potting mediums my husband and Iike best is lava rock. We use either the small (finer rooted orchids) or slightly larger rock (for all the other orchids).
The advantages of lava rock:
never breaks down
does not hold excess water/drains easily
provides some weight so the pot is less able to tip over
Resist the temptation to over fertilize your orchid(s). They usually need a time of reducuced/no fertilizer in order to rev up for blooming. If you look up care for the phals, you should be able to find out when their rest time is.
If your orchid is inside you might want to check some info on indoor orchid care as there might be some additional steps to caring for indoor orchids.
Hope this helps
