Easy Steps in Growing Orchids of Phalaenopsis

The orchids are lovely flowers that are usually magenta or purple with white streaks. There are about 26,000 species worldwide.Coming from the famous family of flowers, Orchidaceae, most cultivated orchids are popular Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. There are many hybrid varieties available as well. The word orchid is derived from the Greek "orkhis" meaning testicles. That is because the roots are formed in this way. Orchids are found mainly in Europe, Antarctica, Asia, Central America, South America, above the Arctic Circle and Africa. They are not found in deserts and cold regions. Orchid growing is becoming a pastime of many. And phalaenopsis orchids are the easiest of all species to grow.

Phalaenopsis orchids or phala are the most demanding in the flower industry. And since they require similar conditions to what we have in our home, many fans at home phala grow today. The growth of orchids depend on a number of different factors such as humidity, irrigation, fertilization, soil moisture, light, air movement and shade. During the purchase of orchids you should be careful that their leaves are healthy. Healthy mean that the foliage is light green. The roots of this plant should be firm too.

Most of the things to consider when growing orchids is the amount of light they are exposed. Too much sun light cause burns or sunburn the leaves. This means that the leaves become a darker shade of green or development of orange patches on them. You will also receive wrinkles. Too little light will turn yellow and there would be flowers. They can also be grown under artificial light such as fluorescent bulbs.

Control over moisture levels is important. Most hybrids need about 60 to 80 percent moisture to grow well. However, they can survive 30 to 40 percent. While growing, place a tray of water and some gravel near them so they can absorb enough moisture around it.Another important thing to consider is the soil they need. Orchids can not be grown in regular soil used for other plants. Orchids are "epiphytes", meaning "on the sheet. They grow in the branches of trees. Fertilization is also essential. Liquid fertilizer can be applied once every two weeks. The concentration should be kept means that no burn roots and leaves of the plant.

Growing orchids and depends on the proper methods of watering. You should not over water or under water them. Orchids absorb moisture from the air so you do not need water as do other plants.roots and green leaves are signs that business is watering the plants properly. Phala pruning is an important aspect. Should be done just after flowering has finished. Flowering lasts for about 3 months. When the flowers begin to fade, cut with scissors without damaging the other parts. This helps in sustaining nutrients. So follow these simple steps and enjoy the flowering of orchids.
