There are several varieties that you can keep indoors on a windowsill, and a few that you can keep in a garden if you are unlikely to have frost under -2 centigrades, but you’d have to ask a specialist about them. Terrestrials like paphiopedium, cypripedium and odontoglossum species would be the most likely candidates. There are hybrids available now specially bred for windowsill conditions, but you’d probably need to talk to an orchid nursery to find out what they are, and how they would be suited to conditions in your place.

Of course! Phalaenopsis is one of the easiest varieties to grow at home in a sunny windowsill. With even less-than-ideal growing conditions, it will bloom at least once a year. Greenhouses are reserved for the more exotic orchids that do not tolerate any temperature drops in the winter.
